See Saw Margery Daw

November 3, 2011 § Leave a comment

See saw Margery Daw,
Johnny shall have a new master.
He shall earn but a penny a day,
Because he can’t work any faster.

An old old rhyme that is still being absorbed into little kids’ memories. I always ask them if they know what they can buy with a penny! And to imagine only earning a penny a day…

It is sung to lots of tunes, the books I have are all different, and a sample of youtube videos are all different, so chances are you won’t recognise my version!

And there are other verses, wikipedia has a nice background, and a link to a George Orwell essay on Nonsense rhymes.
