Hey diddle diddle

Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon,
The little dog laughed to see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

The best known and most enduring of the nonsense type of nursery rhymes. It has inspired so many lovely versions, and the illustrations on this site. Sometimes the dog sees such fun, rather than such sport..

One of my favourite books based on this rhyme is `The Adventures of the Dish and Spoon’ by Mini Grey, and I imagine their ‘tune’ playing on the old record player in the junk shop…

The song has been around a long time, and wikipedia has all the history but what it can’t help with is variations in the tune. I have heard it sung to at least two different tunes.

I found another illustration today that I love, by victorian illustrator Randolph Caldecott which also captures the running away of the dish and the spoon.
